Brian has loved the Tesla Model S for as long as he can remember, it has been a boyhood dream to drive one. Well, in this episode, Bryce and Brian got to pick one of their dream rides to take on a little road trip to see whose handled better. Bryce picked a Mercedes Bens SL55 AMG to pit against the Model S 85D. To anyone who has done any research into their Tesla models, knows that this is not a fair fight! Nonetheless, Bryce and Brian were set out to convince the other that their pick was the best. With both cars priced in the $100,000-$125,000 range when first sold as new, the question to be asked, is which one is Better?
After reviewing both cars, it is clear that they were built for two different people. The Tesla, with massive cabin, tall center stack, and all the bells and whistles could be seen as the perfect grocery getter, or the ideal family car. All this, without sacrificing passing power with a zero-60 in 2.8 seconds and equivalent 532 horsepower. The Tesla has a wide cockpit with plenty of room to stretch, and plentiful compartments to store small items within arm’s reach. The unique thing about these electric cars is that 100% of the power is available %100 of the time, whereas a gas powered engine has to spool up power, and has the maximum horsepower during a limited RPM range and it differs from car to car.
Mercedes has designed the SL55 AMG with someone different in mind. The trunk could work for the occasional grocery run, but with only 2 seats it is of course not designed with a family in mind. It boasts a 0-60 time in just 4.5 seconds. Benz is known for luxury, and for many, they set the bar. The cabin is smaller and everything is closer to the driver it seems. The car felt heavier than the Tesla, but once the Supercharger kicked in you could REALLY feel it.
